A physical board:
- Makes you feel more attached to the work—you can literally touch the work.
- Increases meaning, ownership, accountability if you write the stickies yourself.
- Provides very high communication bandwidth, potentially.
- Provides a better overview of status and progress.
- Provides easy access to all stakeholders.
- Allows you to view it from a distance, getting a holistic view on the work.
- Radiate much more information than a relatively small monitor.
- Provides a central shared space for the team to convene and talk about the work.
- Makes people attend to each other rather than the board.
An electronic board:
- Better supports distributed teams in a consistent way.
- Allows multiple views on the same information (multi-facetted).
- Collects statistics for free, provided the board is well-designed and used with discipline.
- Tracks connections between code changes, tasks, stories, and epics easier.
Bottom line: use both a physical and electronic board. Use the electronic board for everything so it self-generates statistical data (see metrics drive behavior). Use the physical board for current work in progress, work that you need to coordinate on a daily basis.
